Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal
Electrolysis is still the only guaranteed method of permanent hair removal. It can be performed on all parts of the body, including eyebrows and ears, but not where there are mucous membranes. Many different hair and skin types can be treated, and people who are not good candidates for laser hair removal may still be able to get electrolysis. A commitment for regular sessions is a must since multiple sessions are required before permanent hair removal is achieved.
How does electrolysis work?
A fine, sterile filament is inserted into the hair follicle alongside of the hair until it reaches the hair root. The hair root contains the source of growth and nourishment for all hairs - the papilla and bulb. An electric current is discharged at the hair root to destroy the papilla and hair germs cells in the bulb.
Why are multiple sessions required?
Multiple sessions are required for permanent results because the hair must be targeted in its growth stage, the anagen stage. There are 3 stages in the hair growth cycle and it is during the anagen stage that the hair is attached to the papilla. During the catagen and telogen stages, the hair detaches from the papilla, therefore, the papilla will not be destroyed during these stages. Although the hairs on your body may look like they are all at the same stage, 20% of all hairs at any one time are in the telogen (resting) stage. One full complete hair growth cycle takes 8-13 weeks, and electrolysis needs to go through a couple of growth cycles before the all of the hair is caught at the anagen stage. Previous methods of hair removal, such as shaving, tweezing, and waxing, also distort the hair follicle, making it hard to reach the papilla. The distorted follicles have to go through a straightening process first before electrolysis will be effective.
